Who Did the Art for Transformers TCG?

Since around March 2019, I’ve been attempting to identify where the battle card art originates from in the Transformers TCG; identifying which comic issues they come from, what characters are present, and most importantly who drew and coloured each card. Wizards of the Coast haven’t provided much in the way of official information, so I took it upon myself to start keeping track of this information. The project has been keeping up with new cards featuring original artwork, and has expanded to character cards (though information about these is often my scarce).

This section of the website is dedicated to the findings of this project. I’ve managed to find out this information through various means – public social media posts, private correspondence, personal investigation and for a lot of Wave 1 and 2 cards, simply churning through comic after comic trying to identify tiny frames.

This project is not complete, and likely never will be without official credits. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the art is likely to be a more collaborative process and multiple people might be involved in the art of one particular piece.

A live progress of the project is available as a google drive spreadsheet.

Battle Card Art
Battle card artwork originally was sourced from various comics published by IDW comics. These ranged from more contemporary books such as More than Meets the Eye and Robots in Disguise, through original IDW books like Infiltration and All Hail Megatron, to the more obscure G1-continuation Regeneration One. The cut off point for use of IDW artwork appears to be around the Revolution crossover released in late 2016; the latest art comes from issues of Til All Are One published as late as March 2017.

Despite their popularity in the Transformers fandom, there is no art by IDW artists Kei Zama (Optimus Prime) or Jack Lawrence (Lost Light). Yet.

For Siege I + II (Waves 3 + 4), battle cards started to use original artwork, including new artwork for pre-existing cards like Brainstorm and Forcefield.

Character Card Art
The origins of character card art tends to vary; during Wave 1 most of the art originated from the Transformers Legends mobile game, and art from that game continued to be used in latter waves. Toy box art has also been used frequently for character cards, as well as other promo art (such as with Lord Megatron in Wave 4). However, some original art has also been commissioned for the game, especially from Wave 3 onwards.
